Bilbo Baggins found the Ring and took it for his own, and Gollum afterwards pursued it for the rest of his life. Centuries of the Ring's influence twisted Gollum's body and mind, and, by the time of the novels, he "loved and hated, as he loved and hated himself." Throughout the story, Gollum was torn between his lust for the Ring and his desire to be free of it. ![]() Gollum referred to the Ring as "my precious" or "precious", and it extended his life far beyond natural limits. Sméagol obtained the Ring by murdering his relative Déagol, who found it in the River Anduin. In The Lord of the Rings it is stated that he was originally known as Sméagol, corrupted by the One Ring, and later named Gollum after his habit of making "a horrible swallowing noise in his throat". Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit of the River-folk who lived near the Gladden Fields. ![]() He was introduced in the 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, and became important in its sequel, The Lord of the Rings.

Review: Margot Robbie deserves a gold for I, Tonya ![]() ![]() The US soldiers who became North Korean film stars are any of them what they’re cracked up to be? The most intelligent film in the franchise by several light years, The Last Jedi can be seen as the space-opera equivalent of Clint Eastwood’s revisionist western, Unforgiven, in that it pours scorn on its hero’s legendary reputation - but it eventually gives us the satisfaction of seeing why he acquired that legendary reputation in the first place. The Force, the Jedi, good, evil, destiny, family, self-sacrifice, war itself. All the monolithic concepts that have been the foundation stones of the Star Wars saga are chipped away. In an early scene, Luke himself asks why anyone would assume that a man with a laser sword could turn the tide against a fascist army, and the film, written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper) keeps prodding and pulling at its own mythos with the same irreverent spirit and enquiring mind. The clever thing about Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is that it takes these questions seriously, and it has a lot of tongue-in-cheek fun with them, too. ![]() The RMS detection means that Schlap detects the average loudness of a signal, resulting in sudden short peaks being uncompressed so that they can attack hard and sound heavy hitting.
